'Hunger Games' Makes It Three In A Row At The Top
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Multiplex audiences remain hungry for The Hunger Games.
The runaway science fiction epic finished in first place at the box office for the third weekend in a row by earning an estimated $33-million, pushing its cumulative total over the $300-million mark.
One of the weekend's new mainstream attractions -- the American Pie comedy sequel, American Reunion -- finished a strong second. Its debut-weekend total was $21-million.
Titanic, the winner of 11 Oscars in 1997, was re-released in the 3-D format and opened last Wednesday, managing a third-place finish. It took in $17-million on its first weekend.
And holdovers Wrath of the Titans and Mirror Mirror rounded out the top five with $15-million and $11-million, respectively.
Overall, as has been true of most weekends so far this year, industry-wide totals were above those of a year ago.
