Native Trees Perfect For Planting
By Phran Novelli
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Such pretty flowers and it doesn't get too big - a nice little tree can fit in almost anywhere; beside a patio, in a courtyard, or along the street. Even under utility wires where they'll never tower over power lines or be brutally pruned to keep their branches clear. So, this week, I'm telling you about nice little native trees to plant this spring.
Native plants already like living around here, so they thrive with less fuss from you, while welcoming lots of birds and butterflies to your yard.
Consider our native dogwood, Cornus florida which is flowering about now (see top of photo at left), then gets lovely leaves, and pretty fall color, followed by red berries for winter. Our native Cercis canadensis, also called the Redbud tree, has spring blooms with vibrant pink, purple or white flowers outlining bare branches (lower portion of photo) before unfurling sweetly heart-shaped leaves.
So, that's two - our native dogwoods and Redbud trees.
