Philadelphia Police Get Schooled On New Social Media Policy

By Melony Roy

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- With a new handle and some new rules, a Philadelphia Detective has returned to his Twitter beat.

The Philadelphia Police Department asked Detective Joseph Murray to stop tweeting under his personal account so that he could be trained in on the department's new social media policy. After almost three months--and to the delight of his 600 followers—"The Fuzz" is back.

"I've been posting on blogs, message boards and Twitter for a long time now. It gives them an insight into what we do as detectives, and it gives me an idea of what exactly is going on that we do not hear of out on the street," says Detective Murray.

As to whether tweeting is encouraged, the Philadelphia Police Department's spokeswoman says, "We're developing a small pilot of officers of all ranks that will be using Twitter."
