PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Philadelphia’s population is continuing to grow, according to estimates released on Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.
City officials were crowing a year ago when the official 2010 Census numbers showed an upward tick in Philadelphia’s population, the first since 1950. Now, the 2011 population estimate gives them even more to crow about. It shows an increase of about 10,000 people during that one year.
“The official count showed an increase for the first time in 50 years,” said Susan Copella, Director of the Pennsylvania State Data Center. “And now we’re still seeing that trend of an increase in the population for the city.”
The estimate covers the period April 2010 through July 2011. It is based on a combination of birth and death figures, as well as inward and outward migration of residents.
