Bucks County Athletic Field For Special Needs Kids Gets Much-Needed Boost

By Brad Segall

CHURCHVILLE, Pa. (CBS) -- The Miracle League of Northampton (Bucks County) is moving closer to achieving its goal of building athletic fields for special needs children.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities presented a $25,000 check this week to the Miracle League, which has raised about a million dollars to build the baseball and multipurpose field at the Northampton Township Municipal Park (see related story).

The grand opening and first pitch is still scheduled for April 22nd.  Miracle League president Joe Hand Jr. (second from right in photo) says the mild winter really helped with construction.

"One of the biggest things was, we were able to get the surface underneath the field down -- the asphalt -- lay that in the winter which is really, really, really rare," he tells KYW Newsradio, "and we needed a thirty day window after that for that to kind of set."

Hand says the plan is to pour the field a week from Monday.

The surface is made of recycled tires, which will make it easier for disabled children to get around.

Hand says they are still raising money for what he calls the "bells and whistles" -- like benches, a storage shed, some landscaping, and a sound system.
