Police: 6-Year-Old Died Of Malnutrition, Abuse; Parents In Custody

By Elizabeth Hur

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A smiling little boy is gone and police say he was murdered by his own parents.

Khalil Wimes was just six-years-old who, according to sources, was abused, beaten and starved inside his home in the 1800 block of South 22nd Street in Philadelphia’s Point Breeze neighborhood. When he died, we’re told he weighed at most 27 pounds.

“It’s sad because I never saw him. You had your son cooped up in a house? That’s a shame,” neighbor Sherelle Carter said.

Neighbors were shocked to not only learn of his tragic death, but also because they never knew Khalil even lived next door.

“I never saw the kid come out since I’ve been around here,” neighbor Shaquiale Spritley said.

Police arrested and charged Khalil’s parents — 49-year-old Floyd Wimes and 44-year-old Tina Wimes — with first degree murder and related offenses.

Suspects Floyd Wimes, Tina Wimes

According to sources, on Monday night, the Wimes took Khalil to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia claiming he fell coming out of a tub that he seemed OK at first but later passed out.

“I believe his parents took him to CHOP at around 10:45 p.m. By 11:16 p.m., he was pronounced dead. After that, he was taken to the medical examiner’s office, they ruled it a death by blunt force trauma to the head,” Capt. James Clark said.

Source say Khalil had various old injuries including significant scarring, bruising and cuts all over his body. We also learned he was under foster care for some time, but was returned to his parents two years ago.

Neighbors are baffled.

“They didn’t look like the type that would do nothing like that, it’s still sad,” Carter said.

Sources say the Wimes had eight children but at the time of their arrest, only two lived with them – the victim and his three-year-old sister.

The three-year-old girl is now with relatives.

The Department of Human Services declined to comment because of privacy issues, but according to sources, DHS did not have an “open case” with the victim or his three-year-old sister, but the welfare agency will now work with the police on this ongoing investigation.

I am so apauled by this behavior. How does one starve their own child, however, it seems to be happening more and more. And if any one hasn’t noticed the people starving these poor kids are fat as cows. I say throw their butts in jail and let them starve!!!

Where is Rev. Al Sharpton and racist JEsse JAckson on this true crime?? Where are they??

Another case of DEATH by apathy……that is not a single soul that SHOULD have cared, SHOULD have checked on these children, SHOULD have called the police, actually did.

“The three-year-old girl is now with relatives”.

WHY? The relatives knew this boy existed in a hell hole and did nothing. You can’t tell me no one else in this family knew they were starving this boy. But yet they give the daughter to these people. NO! I’ve even called CPS on my own sister for leaving her kids alone. It was the first time I heard of her doing it and I still called. I wasn’t going to give her another chance to have something happen t her kids. This is what those relatives should have done BEFORE this boy died. Now the parents, well their apartment on the 13th level of hell is right across the way from Casey Anthony’s.

Where is Rev Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson on this issue?? Blacks are the single biggest threat to blacks.

      • Mom6

They are not needed for this case, these two are black and will be prosecuted, believe me, THEY will definitely serve time. It’s when others kill people of color and are about to walk freely, that’s when those two come out. I hope I clarified it for you, but I doubt it. I don’t think it’s that you don’t understand why it is necessary for them to come out, I think you just want us to sit idly by and allow others to commit crimes against us. Then you would probably comment on how we won’t even fight for ourselves. Damned if we do, and damned if we don’t.

I agree the system failed this child. Philadelphia is about as worse as Florida when it comes to protecting children.

    • albro

The “system” was a secondary failure: THIS CHILDS SELF-PITYING USELESS PARENTS failed and killed this little boy! Quit looking for someone else to point your finger at!

  • Glynne1964

Doesn’t look like either of these monsters missed a meal! But yet they starved their child? What the HELL??!!! I’d like to beat them like a couple of pinatas…make sure ALL the candy (brains) falls out!
May these 2 rot in the deepest depths of HELL. I hope that someone gets ahold of them in jail & gives them some raw justice. Death is too good for these 2. Maybe they should just be locked in a cell & forgotten UNTIL THEY WEIGH 27 LBS!!! That’s what I think should happen to people like this they get what they gave. Plain & simple!

Yet another case where a child dies because the CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES in our country FAILS over and over. How on earth was this child placed back in their care, and never followed up on? So many unemployed yet these CPS people still have jobs. SMH

  • Judy

There are a million kids right now who are being beaten, tortured and abused in unimaginal ways by their parents. This is just the tip of the iceberg folks. We need to get involved when we suspect something is going in a houshold!!! But we just don’t want to get involved..too much trouble. Dogs are treated better than our children. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!

  • kate

how does a parent do this? an animal feeds their young– and i believe the extended family should have gotten involved and should not point fingers at the DHS– DID THEY ever visit the children to check on them? and where are the rest of the 8 children? God forgive me i wish both parents a long suffering death perhaps at the hands of the general population of prison

    • noname

you’ll have to take another look at what was on the news. the extended family was involved in trying to help this child and the others. The parents fought against them in court and the courts gave the child back to them. despite pleas from the extended family that the child was in danger. despite looking at the past evidence of abuse. and all DHS can say is “we have no open cases on this child”? huh…wth? really what does that mean? and the court interperates that as…the child isn’t being currently abused and ignores the history (like this is just any other crime where you can’t bring up their criminal past) i saw one person on the news say, we have done everything legally possible. these extended families members must be wrecked with grief, wondering, should i have done what really needed to be done and beat these evil people to death before the could torture and kill a child?

      • Just Me

I’m feeling you and I am in total agreement with what you are saying. It may be too little too late, but, I hope they NEVER get out of prison. AND I hope they put them in with the General Population (GenPop) so that they can get what they deserve.

    • LusciousDC

I just don’t understand why people who know they won’t treat a baby right, have them. Just NOT understanding. I wonder if the daughter was starved and abused too. People like this make me sooooooo angry. Sometimes I just want to shake them until their heads fall off. Ughhhhh!

  • Deborah Butler

Tina and Floyd, why did you starve that baby? Are you that heartless. Did you not eat? You both make me sick. I hope you get to feel what it is like to be abused.

  • culpable

anyone notice how fat they are, people make me HATE!!!!!!

  • culpable
