Chlamydia

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - C. Trachomatis causes one of the most prevalent sexually transmitted infections worldwide, as well as infections of the eye that are a leading infectious cause of blindness.

Chlamydia is a major problem among sexually active young adults. Any reasearch we can do can have a great effect if it can help reduce the aggressiveness of this pathogen. Researchers have been studying the structure of chlamydia since 1959 to see if it has changed or what makes it more aggressive.

New information suggests that there may be additional weaknesses that can be exploited in chlamydia trachomatis to enhance the treatment choices we have. This is very important as we look at drug resistance. This can help us treat it and contain it.
