Barnes Museum Tickets Go On Sale To An Eager Public

By Kim Glovas

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Barnes Foundation's new location on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway is set to open May 19th.

Tickets went on sale to the general public today, and several dates are already sold out.

The new Barnes location is much bigger than the facility in Merion: 93,000 square feet in Philadelphia compared to just 12,000 square feet at the original location.

But Andrew Stewart of the Barnes says the experience will be quite similar:

"Even though we will be much, much more accessible in Philadelphia, the galleries are being recreated as the same size as they were in Merion, so the gallery space is still quite small.  And we want people to have a quiet experience, as they had in Merion."

As a result, timed tickets will be sold, allowing groups in every half-hour.

In addition, a special free weekend is planned for Memorial Day weekend.  Visitors will be allowed to see the entire new Barnes Foundation exhibit, including a history of the collection, and Albert Barnes' educational theory -- even the café.
