Cab Crashes Into Storefront In Center City

By Jim Melwert

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A cab driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a Center City storefront, overnight.

The cab jumped up on the sidewalk in the middle of the shopping district, at 16th and Chestnut Streets, right across from the Shops at Liberty Place. The taxi smashed into the front of The Children's Place, ripping off part of the façade and shattering a window by the door.

It happened at about 12:40 this morning, and witnesses say fortunately, with all the restaurants, bars, and hotels nearby, there were no pedestrians on the sidewalk.

"I just saw the cab (go) right into the building, it was kind of awkward seeing the cab run in there. The front was really smashed up, a cop car came, an ambulance came."

Lacia Hamilton saw the aftermath. She says she was amazed the cabbie wasn't hurt, but adds his passenger was pretty shaken up.

"The whole front of the taxi car was smashed in. The girl had like a little bump on her head, she got rushed in an ambulance. She was the only person in there. She was crying and distraught, but I think she was just more traumatized."

The cabbie and his passenger were checked out at a local hospital. Just bumps and bruises police say, but, understandably, witnesses say the passenger was pretty shaken up.

No word why or how the cabbie ended up on the sidewalk, but police say so far no charges.
