For Salaried Workers, Is 'Leap Day' An Unpaid Workday?

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The February 29th "leap day" adds an extra day to the 2012 calendar year.  But are you getting paid for that extra day at work?

Most folks headed to work paid no attention to Leap Day until I pointed out that most salaried employees are working a free day, since the work year is based on 365 days, not 366 days.

"I'm going home! See you later!  I'm shopping!" said one woman with a laugh.

"I never really thought about it until you just brought it up," said another.

One woman happened to be walking around with her boss.

"What are you gonna do about it?" she asked her superior.
"I don't know, I'm not the one who dictates how many days we get paid for," the boss replied.
"Well, let's work on that, okay?"

And this man says he never paid attention to Leap Day before, but he certainly will now.

"I think I'll go up right now and open up the conversation with the general manager and say, 'Are we getting paid for this extra day?'  I think it's a good topic -- I'm glad I ran into you!"
