Suspect In West Philadelphia Hit-And-Run Arrested

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The suspect wanted in the hit-and-run of a 9-year-old girl in West Philadelphia was arrested Tuesday.

Safiyah Bankhead turned herself in to police around noon Tuesday. Her lawyer, Michael Giampietro, says Bankehead panicked and drove off after hitting Aijahanae Johnson in the 4800 block of Merion Avenue last week (see related story).

Johnson was released from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia last week after suffering cuts and bruises, but she was taken back to the hospital today after complaining of leg pain. She is expected to recover.

Authorities say Bankhead did not have an active drivers license at the time of the accident. She is charged with leaving the scene of an accident while unlicensed.
