Police: Man Fatally Shot His Own Father During Argument In Chester County

CALN TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) – A suspect has been arrested in the shooting death of his own father in Chester County Monday evening.

Derek J. Smith, 26, has been charged with murder for his alleged role in the shooting death of his father, Steve Washington, inside the family's home in the 200 block of Seltzer Avenue in Caln Township.

According to investigators, the incident began as an argument between Smith and his father. During the argument, Smith told authorities he went to his second-floor bedroom and got a gun and when he returned to the living room, Smith allegedly told police he shot his father twice.

Washington was pronounced dead at the scene.

When officers arrived at the scene, they located Smith outside of the residence and he was taken into custody without incident.

During questioning, Smith told investigators that he had a long history of not getting along with his father.

"This was a family argument. At worst, it should have ended with bruised feelings. Instead, a father is dead and a son has been arrested for murder," Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan said.

Smith has been charged with murder, weapons offenses and related charges.
