Begin With A Healthy Breakfast

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It has been stated over and over again. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for all of us. It is particularly important for our children. Studies have shown that a good breakfast can help with learning and set up the entire day for productivity.

Most kids love doughnuts and pastries but they are loaded with fat and sugar. There are some excellent substitutes including whole grain products like whole-grain waffles.

If your kids like bacon you can substitute Canadian bacon or turkey bacon. Whole-wheat or whole grain toast tastes great and is better than white toast. Skip sugary cereals in favor of whole-grain, low sugar cereals topped with berries. Fruit is a great way to spice up cereal.
