Joe Paterno’s Doctors Report Serious Decline In Health Since Saturday

By Oren Liebermann and Spike Eskin

PHILADELPHIA (CBS/AP) — Former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno is in serious condition.

Quoting individuals close to the family, The Washington Post reported on its website that Paterno remained connected to a ventilator, but had communicated his wishes not to be kept alive through any extreme artificial means. The paper said his family was weighing whether to take him off the ventilator on Sunday.

Joe Paterno’s doctors said that the former Penn State coach’s condition had become “serious,” following complications from lung cancer in recent days.

“Over the last few days Joe Paterno has experienced further health complications,” family spokesman Dan McGinn said in a brief statement Saturday to The Associated Press. Reports early Saturday indicated Paterno was ‘near death,’ but doctors confirm his condition is serious.

“His family will have no comment on the situation and asks that their privacy be respected during this difficult time,” McGinn said.

Paterno, 85 years old, was the head coach of the Penn State football program for 46 years until he was let go in 2011 after the arrest of former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky for child sexual abuse charges.

Paterno was diagnosed with lung cancer shortly after his termination.

@ jack rabbit, change your name to ‘jack @$$’. Have some respect and decency for the Family of this great Man. He does not deserve what they did to him. Penn State was his baby and they took that away from him. I honest believe that Joe Pa would not be going through what he’s going through had he not been fired. My Prayers are with Joe Pa and his Family during this trying time. As for you, jack @$$, get some religion. GOD BLESS JOE PA!!

Penn State needs to pay for what they did to Joe. I hope a lot of parents put their monry someplace else when it comes time for their kids to go to college. They didn’t investigate the initial event…….went on for years…….finally a parent brings it to the publics notice and they fire Joe Pa. I used to think Penn State had it together, but now I think you need to clean house thoroughly and start again.
To the boys who were ruined by Sandusky, I am so sorry….please be strong….you are better than he was. You may have to work a little harder, but you can all be good men. To Joe – I am also so sorry that you are so sick. I hope you find peace. God Bless you, Mr. Paterno!!

our prayers go out to joe and suepa. he will be missed across the nation. say what you want about him and the sandusky case, but it killed him. the trustees can no longer use him as a scapegoat.

  • tom

God Bless you Joe and the whole Paterno family.
As for the Board of Trustees, its all your fault. He was doing well until you fired him for the issues of others. I can promise the Board that when my children are old enough to attend college, my money is going elsewhere.

  • Irene

    Prayers for the Paterno family.

    • CRhae

Amen, nobody deserves to have their deathbed sensationalized. Give them a break.

We are sadden by the news of Joe Pa. We will say prayers for him & his family.

  • JustMe

This is awful. It seems that Joe Pa was alright until they fired him for something, in my opinion, that he didn’t do. Sandusky is the criminal and they persecute Joe Pa, who was the best Coach ever. My Prayers to the Family and Friends, and of course, Joe Pa. It is truly a sad day!!

  • Jack Rabbit

What did Joe Know about Sandusky and when did he Know it ?

  • SEM

The media sent out a mob with pitchforks for Paterno’s career, and this is the end result. I’m so sorry that the media made us all forget that Sandusky is the suspected criminal. Such a shame. He’ll never be anything but one of the greatest men to ever step onto a sideline.

    • LIZ

Agree totally! JoePa did so much for so many. He didn’t deserve this. SHAME ON YOU PSU Board of Trustees!

  • steven
