College Students Exercise Less
By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It is something that most parents don't think about when their kids head off to college.
Certainly there are many things to worry about like the adjustment to dorm life, new independence and the pressures of college life. So, whether or not there is enough exercise in the day to day schedule is not a pressing issue. But according to a new report out of Ontario, most college students see a dramatic dip in the amount they are exercising on a regular basis.
In fact it is measurable -- a 24 percent decrease in physical activity.
The concern is that a trend is started which can continue throughout the college years and into the work world.
The reason I bring the study up at this point is that many students have been home from break or are still home and it might be a good time to talk about how much exercise they are getting.
