PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Philadelphia police say a 10-year-old girl was hit by an SUV in Mayfair this afternoon, after getting off her school bus.

Police say it was just before 3:30 when the girl got off her bus, and ran around the Back of the bus, directly into traffic. She was struck by the SUV at the corner or Large and Pratt. The SUV driver stopped.

Police say the girl is in critical condition at Saint Christopher’s Hospital for Children where she is being treated for head trauma.

No charges will be filed against the driver.

If she heads to the back of the bus; the driver would think she is on the curb and is safe. Yes; there are many careless drivers out there. But children are very carefree! Good that the driver stopped; many don’t!

No charges? Isn’t there supposed to be a stop sign that the driver extends until all of the kids are across the street? I understand she ran BEHIND the bus but if all the cars were stopped because the bus had the stop sign out, how would she NOT be seen? The driver of the bus or car should be responsible for this.
