Parishioners In Delaware County React To Catholic School Closings

By Suzanne Monaghan

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The recommendation to close or consolidate several Catholic Schools was on the minds of many parishioners during Sunday mass.

Nativity BVM in Media is slated to merge with another school in Wallingford. The news brings mixed emotions; sadness to see the changes but acceptance that the commission is making the right recommendations for the greater good of the Catholic school system in the area.

“It’s sad to see a lot of the teachers lose their jobs and a lot of the children have to be bused in different places and then adjust to a whole new way of doing things, but I guess it has to be done.”

“I’m sure there has been a lot of prayer around it. Hopefully we go forward from here and are stronger as a result and offer better educational opportunities for the schools and continue to bond as a church community.”

Some of the Nativity staffers will be offerered new jobs once the consolidation is complete.

My high school: The great Saint James closed in the 90’s and its legacy still lives on forever.

May save the church some money, but it will increase costs to the local taxpayers – these children will have to be bussed further and the money will come out of the local school district budget. So what will have to be cut from the public school budget to pay for the extra bussing?

For starters, the public schools need to stop building schools that resemble a palace, stop playing their football games at night (field lights are an added expense) what ever happened to the Saturday day games. They also need to consider the cost of Asto turf, that seems to be the latest thing here in Delco.

I guess that it is easier to blame teacher salaries instead of addressing these other issues…………….go figure?
