A Local Nun Counsels Corporations On Social Responsibility

By Pat Loeb

Philadelphia (CBS) – An effort to improve corporate citizenship has an unlikely leader: A Sister of Saint Francis, from Delaware County, is meeting with corporate executives all over the country, to convince them to become more socially responsible.

"We have seen that we have made a difference in the lives of many, many people."

Sister Nora Nash doesn't look intimidating but she's persuaded the leaders of dozens of corporations to meet with her and sign on to her request that their practices respect human rights, consumer safety and worker fairness.

Tom McCaney, the order's associate director of Corporate Responsibility, has a theory.

"People look for agendas and when they see a woman religious that agenda is out front. They are not there to make a name for themselves or to make money somehow. They're there for justice. They're there for doing the common good."

Sister Nora is not trying to make a name for herself but after a decade of activism, companies have learned to work with her.

"They know who we are and they have been very co-operative."
