Cancer Cases On The Decline In America

By Dr. Brian McDonough

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - There's good news from the American Cancer Society.

Cancer cases and cancer deaths have dropped in much of the United States. It is the lowest we've seen since 1999. The death rates have declined in both men and women among all racial and ethnic groups with the exception of Alaskan natives and American Indians.

The biggest drop in death rates were among African-American and Latino men although their overall rate is still high.

As for the major declines, we've seen lung cancer responsible for the largest drop in death rates for men and breast cancer deaths have declined the most among women.
