Mummers Strut Down Broad Street For The Annual Parade

By Jericka Duncan and Mike Dougherty

Philadelphia (CBS) – The winners of the 2012 Mummers Parade were announced Sunday night at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

Woodland finished first among the string bands, and was followed in the standings by Quaker City, South Philadelphia, Ferko and Fralinger. The South Philly Vikings finished first in the fancy brigade division. In the fancy division, Hog Island topped Golden Sunrise and Murray topped Landi and Goodtimers in the comic division.

The annual New Year’s Day Mummers Parade tradition kicked off early Sunday morning in South Philadelphia.

As early as 5 a.m., Eyewitness News followed the Golden Sunrise New Year’s Association. They spent much of their morning loading props and customs onto trucks.

“We’ve been around since 1960,” said Sunrise member Matt Glovacz, who gave his annual speech before his Mummer group left for the parade.

“Let’s kick some butt,” said Glovacz. “Just remember to smile and have fun.”

Philadelphia’s rich, Mummer history goes back more than 100 years. Organizers say the first recognized parade was in 1901. Since then, the event has and continues to attract thousands of spectators every year.

Mummers in the U.S. of A. I love it. Besides Newfoundland and Labrador Canada – I believe Philly maybe the only other places where Mummers as a living tradition. CFA

Move the Mummers to New Year’s EVE!
As long as the Mummers must compete with hangovers, college football, and hockey they will continue to lose viewers. Lets make a move. Philadelphia could be the premiere New Years Eve destination in the country by holding the parade one day earlier. Imagine after a day long parade, the String Bands playing while fireworks shoot off over City Hall’s clock tower striking 12! Not only would the streets and hotels be packed, but television viewership would be up as well. (so would the prizes for the clubs) Could anywhere compete with that? I have spent New Years Eve in Times Square, Key West, London, Istanbul and Morocco – and believe me, with the Mummers leading the way, Philly would be better than any of them. What do ya think?
