Checks Arrive After Christmas For Some School Employees, District Says Blame Post Office

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It wasn't a happy holiday for some Philadelphia school district employees, who say their last paycheck arrived late -- after Christmas, instead of before.

Some school district employees say they didn't get their paychecks in time for Christmas. Affected were the 15 percent of employees who get paper checks in the mail. School district spokesman Fernando Gallard says the paychecks went out on schedule last Wednesday.

"The checks were mailed on time. And again, employees started receiving them on Friday. It seems that this handful of employees -- or, a number of employees that did not get he on time."

Blame the slowdown on the postal service and heavy holiday volume, he says.  Gallard recommends employees sign up for direct deposit, to avoid any possible delays in the future.
