HOUSTON (AP) — Juan Fernandez scored 23 points and reached a career milestone, Ramone Moore added 15 points, and Temple pulled away in the second half on Monday evening to beat Rice, 77-70.

Fernandez, a senior, came into the game needing three points to reach 1,000 for his career.  He got to 1,001 on a layup 5:10 into the game, then kept scoring.

For the game, Fernandez was eight of 18 from the field, including five of seven on three-pointers.

Aaron Brown scored 10 points for Temple (7-3), and Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson chipped in nine points and 10 rebounds.

Arsalan Kazemi picked up another double-double for Rice (7-4), with 13 points and 11 rebounds.  Lucas Kuipers led Rice with 16 points.

The game was only the second meeting between the Rice Owls and the Temple Owls.  Temple won the previous matchup as well — 70-59, on December 29, 1948.
