Pedestrian On Sidewalk Struck And Killed By Car In Germantown

By Jericka Duncan

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A deadly crash in Philadelphia's Germantown neighborhood claimed the life of a beloved family man. The victim, 59-year-old Cornell Edens, was on his way to his sister's house. He was just steps away when he was killed. Edens was one of 11 children. Family members say he helped care for his 89-year-old mother.

"The accident happened Sunday around 6:30 p.m. on East Price Street, not far from Germantown Avenue.

"They hit my brother right here. My sister live on the corner," said the victim's sister Carrie Edens.

Edens came back Monday morning to pick up the belongings that her 59-year-old brother Cornell Edens used to carry.

"This is his bag you see of cigarettes from when he smoked," said Edens. "He carried a lot of tissue too."

Police say Sunday night , Cornell was walking on the sidewalk alone when someone driving a mini-van ran him over. It happened near the 40th block of East Price Street, steps away from his other sister's Germantown home.

"It's hard, it's hard, it's very hard I just can't take it.," said the victim's older brother Habib Walled

Walled was supposed to be celebrating his 66th birthday Monday and preparing for Christmas. Instead, he's making plans to bury his younger brother. "People don't realize the lives they're wrecking with mischief," Walled expressed.

Last night police took a man into custody but it's unclear whether he was driving the car that killed Cornell Edens.

Witnesses say they watched two suspects flee the scene. At this time police say no charges have been filed against at this time.
