From Education Reports

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Did Jack Maslin fail math in 9th grade? Where did he go to elementary school? Jack is fictitious but the data collected about his school experience is real.

The Seattle Times reports on its unique school system that has a tracking system, anonymous to outside viewers, researchers and the public, which gives local officials material K-through college that they hope will improve their students’ education, preparation for higher ed and the world of work.

Roosevelt High School principal, Brian Vance, believes that tracking college enrollment and retention will help his staff prepare students for college. The data include all colleges in which graduates enroll, whether they’ve returned for a second year, and the numbers requiring remedial courses.

One reader mentioned Big Brother in his comments and another was glad he was born in the “70’s when privacy was more than a concept”. But despite such concerns, learning more about the kids we teach offers important data for personalizing education.
