Philadelphia Schoolkids Hear New Jazz Work At Kimmel Center Preview

By Pat Loeb

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Students from Philadelphia public schools today got a sneak peek at a major new musical work.

The composition, "Can You Hear God Crying," is being created by trumpeter Hannibal Lokumbe and will have its debut in June, but this morning's student performance was a sort of holiday gift, well appreciated by the 1,200 students who attended at the Kimmel Center.

"Best show ever!" said one seventh grader.

"It was awe-sommmme!" said another.

"The part I liked best was when they were drumming," volunteered a third grader.

"I liked when they were jamming," noted another.

Master of ceremonies Denise James says she hopes it appealed not just to the students' ears.

"I hope the children would come away with an appreciation for the music that lives within them, that connects to their world and the world beyond," James told KYW Newsradio.
