Nominee For Last SRC Vacancy Sails Through Confirmation Hearing
By Harrisburg Bureau Chief Tony Romeo
HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) - The nominee for the last vacancy on Philadelphia's School Reform Commission sailed through her confirmation hearing in Harrisburg yesterday.
Under questioning by members of the Senate Education Committee, Feather Houstoun – a former state Welfare Secretary nominated by Governor Corbett to serve on the School Reform Commission – said she believed the panel is ready to make tough decisions, including decisions about closing schools.
"I think there's a lot of resolve, but I don't think you can get caught up in the structure being the issue. I think it's leadership and resolve that we really have to confront some ugly decisions. And the only I would say to you is that some of the senators here are aware I had to lead the state through welfare reform."
Houston's likely confirmation by the full Senate will mean that the SRC will have a full complement of five members for the first time since February. She will be the fourth new member since the start of the year.
