Police Probe Death Of Patient At Wynnefield Mental Health Facility

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Philadelphia police are investigating the death of a patient at a mental health facility late Wednesday evening.

The incident happened at about 10:45 p.m. at the Belmont Behavioral Health facility in the city’s Wynnefield section.

According to police, they are investigating the death of a 23-year-old male patient who may have been attacked by his roommate.

Detectives are currently questioning the victim’s roommate as a potential person of interest.

Sources say the two patients were voluntary mental health commitments, which means they voluntarily checked into the facility.

So far, no charges have been filed.

The hospital treats various disorders and addictions.

As an ex employee I am saddened. Recent changes in the staffing patterns created a lack of staff cohesion. A reason I left and a factor that may have contributed to this tragedy. Labor conflict led to a Union organizing drive. In almost 40 years of caring for the mentally ill I have never confronted a situation like this.
