Ambler Shops Gear Up For Second Annual 'Small Business Saturday'

Elizabeth Hur reports...

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- If you couldn't make the Black Friday sales and you don't want to wait until Cyber Monday, why not head out on Saturday for Small Business Saturday?

Shop owners in Ambler, for instance, want you to give them a shot.

For starters, the owner of In These Shoes told Eyewitness News that she offers jewels, bags and of course shoes, sure to set you apart from the crowd.

Maureen Shanahan of In These Shoes said, "Many people come into my store and they say they always find things here they don't find at other places."

Around the corner at Chamaeleon Boutique, co-owner Ani Kechian explained, "The biggest thing with me and my sister was trying to find unique gifts for friends and family."

You'll find handmade glass bead bracelets from Nepal and paintings by local artists.

For more handmade and local items, there's also Green Street Luxuries, which offers creams, lotions, candles and soaps that are pre-made or made-to-order for your and your pet's specific skin condition.

Candy St. Martine-Pack of Green Street Luxuries said, "I started this business when my youngest son, who's now 20, was born with eczema."

This Saturday marks the second annual Small Business Saturday sponsored by American Express. The idea is to give local economies a boost. This year, Ambler was picked as one of the program's 25 featured towns, thanks in part to Theodore Thompson's daughter, a Wissahickon High School grad who is now in charge of the national campaign.

Thompson explained, "Your local business is your neighbor. If you're helping your neighbor, you're helping yourself, because the moneys that are spent in the stores circulate within the community a lot more than they do at big malls. My understanding is, they feel that a thriving small business will result in a thriving community."

American Express wants to help you make a difference. The company if offering a one-time $25 statement credit when you register an eligible American Express Card and use that Card for a purchase of $25 or more at a small business on November 26th. Registration is limited.
