Gimbels Has It

In Philadelphia, when you thought of Toyland and the Thanksgiving Day Parade, Gimbels was the department store that lured you to Market Street.

Gimbels began as a humble dry goods store in Indiana and became a retail dynasty that spanned 144 years.

One historian captivated by the history of department stores is Michael Lisicky. His last project, Wanamaker’s: Meet Me at the Eagle, became a best seller.

His new book is Gimbels Has It!

I miss the era of the big department store! It was such a treat to got to the city and walk by the huge windows, captivated by the beautiful Holiday displays. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the displays; however, the formerly known, Marshall and Field’s in Chicago has a spectacular display each year. A few years ago, the theme was a Harry Potter Christmas that drew spectators from as far away as Asia. Really, really cool!
