PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Thanksgiving’s the traditional kick off to the holidays and the time when people start packing on pounds. But what you DO over Thanksgiving besides eat can burn off more – or less – of what you put in your mouth.

Just sitting watching TV barely burns a few chips WITHOUT dip – only 40 to 60 calories an hour – depending on your weight (the more you weigh the more calories you burn, whatever you’re doing).

Going out shopping burns 80 to 100 calories an hour standing in line, or twice that pushing a cart, so there go some satisfying spoonfuls of stuffing.

Every hour you spend cleaning, cooking, and doing dishes burns 150 to 200 calories – a nice slice of pumpkin pie.

But one of best ways to enjoy Thanksgiving food without gaining weight is to get out in the garden: an hour of raking leaves, stacking wood, or planting bulbs burns 300 to 500 calories – that’s a hot turkey sandwich with gravy to eat after you come back inside.
