PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Breaking Dawn broke big.
Installment number four in the Twilight series of vampire fantasies — The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 — earned just under $140-million, not only finishing first on its debut weekend, but scoring the fifth biggest weekend opening in movie history.
Another new attraction — the animated sequel, Happy Feet Two — took second place with an otherwise solid first-weekend total of $22-million.
Returnees Immortals, Jack and Jill, and Puss in Boots rounded out the top five, each tallying over $10-million.
But the multiplex story this weekend was Breaking Dawn – Part 1, the many fans of which will now have to wait a full year for Part 2.
Thanks mostly to Breaking Dawn, industry-wide totals were significantly ahead of those on last year’s counterpart weekend.
