'Immortals' Battles To Top Of Box Office
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A sword-and-sandals epic climbed to the box-office Mount Olympus over the weekend.
The 3D fantasy-thriller, Immortals, based on ancient Greek mythology, finished in first place on its debut weekend, earning an estimated $32-million.
Second place belonged to the debuting Adam Sandler comedy, Jack and Jill. It took in a solid $26-million.
Close behind in third was the ticket-selling leader of the past two weekends, Puss in Boots, which took in just under $26-million.
The holdover caper comedy, Tower Heist, was fourth with $13-million.
Rounding out the top five was the weekend's third new mainstream release, J. Edgar, Clint Eastwood's bio-drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio as J. Edgar Hoover. It earned just over $11-million.
Overall, it was the healthiest box-office performance in several months, with industry-wide totals well ahead of last year's pace on the equivalent weekend.
