1 Dead, 2 Critically Injured In Juniata House Fire

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – One person was killed and two others were injured in an early morning house fire in Northeast Philadelphia.

The fire started at about 1 a.m. inside a home in the 4500 block of Pennhurst Street in the city's Juniata section.

Fire officials said one person was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others, including a woman who jumped from a second-story window, are listed in critical condition.

The one-alarm fire was placed under control in approximately 20 minutes.

Fire officials say the home had no smoke alarms.

"We looked, we checked, no smoke alarms, not one smoke alarm," Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers said.

The fire is believed to have started in the basement of the home and firefighters were hampered in getting to the basement because there were no steps to that area.

Ayers said the cause of the deadly fire remain under investigation, but said they are looking into the home's heating and electrical system.
