Philadelphia Area Red Cross Awards Double Scholarships to 2 Area Teens

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Red Cross held its 18th annual "Spectrum Awards" breakfast this morning, honoring women whom Red Cross officials believe embody the spirit of the Red Cross.

Each year, a $5,000 college scholarship is awarded to one high school junior or senior, but this year there were two extraordinary candidates -- so they both received the coveted "Twinkle Star" scholarship.

One winner was Abraham Lincoln High School senior Sara Abdulrasool (left photo), who emigrated from Iraq just two years ago.

"I wanted to go to college and study international relations," she said today.  "The United Nations has helped me a lot."

She also wants to continue her work with the American Red Cross.

Frankford High School senior Sabrina Blake (right photo), an active member of her school's Red Cross Club, was the other scholarship recipent.

"It means so much to me to have this," she said, "knowing that I have support and worked hard to get here."

Other award recipients included Lynn Hardy Yeakel of Drexel University's college of medicine, Donna Allie, founder and president of Team Clean, and Patricia Coulter, president and CEO of the Urban League.
