PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Teachers and administrators at a local school are getting credit for following their instincts.

Suspicions about a student led them to a gun and 56 rounds of ammunition at the Delta School in Northeast Philadelphia.

The Delta School is a private school for students with learning disabilities. The students range in age from 5 to 21 and neighbors say for the most part, the students seem well-behaved.

Mary Brady, a neighbor said, “Never had a problem. Never had any issues with anyone and the people that work there seem really nice too.”

Nice and clearly observant. Eyewitness News learned from sources, police were called to the school Friday morning for a report of a 16-year-old student who brought a gun to school.

Turns out, the student had been misbehaving in recent weeks and on Friday, school officials chose to search his backpack. That’s when sources say the gun and the 56 bullets were discovered. While no one was hurt, neighbors including some who wished to remain anonymous were shaken.

“I have grandchildren and stuff that run around in my backyard. I wouldn’t even want to think about what could happen.”

Brady added, “Thank God people were on top of that, knew enough to keep an eye on him and check him and really averted disaster.”

Police sources say the student had not made any threats but investigators are taking this seriously. The student, whose name is being withheld because of his age, has been charged with weapons-related offenses and remained in custody as of Friday night.

Investigators are now trying to figure out where the student got the gun. Sources say they do know the gun did not come from the student’s family and it had not been reported stolen.
