Neighbors Outraged On North Philadelphia Block Where Newborn Baby Was Found Dead

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police need your help in locating the mother of a newborn baby girl who was found dead on a porch in North Philadelphia, leaving neighbors on the child-friendly block outraged.

"There's no excuse for abandoning a baby," one woman said.

Gwendolyn Jones is a mother of four and lives in the 4900 Block of North Marvine Street, just a few doors down from where police say they found a deceased infant with her umbilical cord still attached. The child, described as a black female, was wrapped in a brown blanket.

"She could have went to a hospital, she could have got help. There's no reason for anyone to ever do that to a baby," Jones said.

"So would you describe your response as angry?"

"Yes, very. Very angry," Jones said.

Police are uncertain where the baby came from, when she was born, or how long she had been on the porch before she was discovered.

Police also say they are concerned about the well-being of the unknown mother. If you have any information, contact police at 215-685-3251 or call 911.
