Deer Mating Season Means Increased Risk For Accidents

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It's deer mating season and that means your chances of colliding with one on the road are higher than at any other time of the year.

Pennsylvania is among the top 5 states for deer and vehicle collisions, according to insurance company statistics. Kurt Gray, director of driver training for AAA Mid-Atlantic, advises if you encounter Bambi on the road, keep the car in your lane.

"You don't want to try and swerve or you'll exchange one emergency for another, apply your brakes nice and firm if you encounter a deer, use your horn to scare the deer and watch your speed."

He says expect to encounter an animal every time you're driving after dusk and that way you'll be ready if you do.
