PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – LIGHTS FOR THE CURE, the area’s first public service campaign that used the lighting of buildings and landmarks to promote a cause, will light up the skyline pink for the 10th year in a row this October in an effort to encourage women to schedule a mammogram as well as celebrate breast cancer survivors and honor those who lost their battle with this disease.

Launched in 2002 by CBS 3 and the Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the campaign started with just 19 buildings and now includes more than 100 participating buildings and landmarks in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. More than half a million dollars in donated and sponsored television time has been dedicated to the campaign since it began to promote early detection.

The lights go pink tomorrow evening, Saturday, October 1st, with most remaining lit throughout the month as a reminder to stay vigilant in the fight against breast cancer. CBS 3 and The CW Philly will feature video of the buildings and landmarks in their weather forecasts throughout the month, each time with a reminder for women to schedule a mammogram.

The National Museum of American Jewish History will join the campaign for the first time this year in addition to Hyatt at The Bellevue and the new Pennsylvania Convention Center. Other participants include the Collingswood, New Jersey business district; the landmark Bethlehem Steel Blast Furnaces, now part of the Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem; Dover Downs in Delaware, Claes Oldenburg’s famous “Clothespin;” Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles; LOVE Park Fountain; Boathouse Row, and the Cira Centre which will display a 6-story pink ribbon in lights on the north and south sides of the building.

Atlantic City will also participate, showing its colors on Friday, October 7 with nine buildings participating. Atlantic City’s campaign is in partnership with the Central and South Jersey Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The Delaware effort, “Turn Delaware Pink,” which will light key buildings throughout the state, is a partnership of the Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, The American Cancer Society and the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition.

CBS 3 and The CW Philly, led by its breast cancer team, “The Women of Eyewitness News,” will be on-air and in the community all month long with the message to stay vigilant in the fight to end this disease that strikes one out of every eight women. Pat Ciarrocchi, Erika von Tiehl, Natasha Brown, Stephanie Stahl and Lesley Van Arsdall will host the annual Komen Philadelphia Pink Tie Ball® at Vie, Cescapé Event Group’s and Philadelphia’s newest entertainment venue. Erika von Tiehl and Natasha Brown will also be walking in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure in Philadelphia October 14-16.

“The CBS family has stood with the women and men of the Delaware Valley on this issue for more than 20 years,” says CBS 3/The CW Philly 57 President and General Manager Jon Hitchcock. “We’re committed to continuing to use our media voice on-air, and on-line to spread the message until there is a cure.”

“Lights for the Cure is a beacon of hope for millions of people and demonstrates the dynamic that makes the breast cancer movement so powerful locally and globally,” says Elaine I. Grobman, Executive Director of the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate. “Thanks to amazing partners like CBS 3, light by light, building by building, community by community – we are generating awareness and saving lives.”

CBS 3, The CW Philly and the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate acknowledge the support of Cancer Treatment Centers of America, sponsor of this campaign. We also thank our community partners for LIGHTS FOR THE CURE – Philadelphia Media Network (The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Philadelphia Daily News and philly.com), the Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation and Hyatt at The Bellevue.
