Truck Owner Questioned In Fatal Wissinoming Hit-Run

Anne-Marie Green reports...

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Police say a 46-year-old woman was struck and killed this morning by the driver of an older model blue pickup truck that failed to stop and fled the scene at a high rate of speed.

The hit-and-run occurred just before 7:30am in the northbound lane of Torresdale Avenue between Simon and Fraley streets in the city's Wissinoming section.  The truck struck Joyce Kenny while going at a high rate of speed, propelling her into the air and onto the southbound side of the street.

They say the driver stopped briefly before speeding off. Kenny was pronounced dead at the scene.

Friends and family of Kenny say she was waiting for a bus, probably on her way to work at the time of the accident.

"This person probably wasn't thinking of anything, but themselves," said the victim's niece, Ruth Ann Ziegler.

Kay, a longtime neighborhood resident, called the one-block stretch of Torresdale Avenue just beyond Harbison dangerous.

"Yes, it is, because once you come on Simon Street, when you're on this side of the street the street is blind and you can't see nothing on the turns. It's a very hazardous ground," she said.

Police say that within a half-hour of the accident, the truck owner contacted police to say his vehicle had been stolen.  The heavily damaged pick-up was discovered a short time later on a lot on Milnor Street, just off Comley Road.

The vehicle was then impounded by accident investigators for further analysis and the owner was being questioned.
