Lewis Out, South Jersey Democrats Unsure About Next Step

BURLINGTON COUNTY, NJ (CBS) -- Now that Carl Lewis is, in fact, out of a New Jersey state senate race in Burlington County, what are Democrats going to do? Party leaders are spending the weekend considering their options.

There is, at this point, a gaping hole on ballots being prepared for printing in the 8th District State Senate race. It's a hole that Joe Andl, Burlington County Democratic Party Chairman, really wants to fill. There are people he won't identify who are willing to fill it. But…

"The deadline to replace candidates has already passed. We don't know where the ballots stand in the printing process," Andl says.

If they do want to insert a replacement, they'll have to decide quickly, and put their lawyers to work. It'll take a court order to make that happen. And then there's the challenge of getting a campaign going in a largely Republican district with just a month-and-a-half before the election.
