Fire In South Philadelphia Claims The Life Of An Elderly Woman, Injures One Man

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A woman is dead and a man is injured after a fire in a South Philadelphia home at 2:00 a.m. Sunday.

Firefighters arrived on the scene in the 2200 block of South Croskey Street to find flames coming from a second floor bedroom.

After crews got the fire under control, they found the victim's body in a bathroom on that same floor.

Deputy Fire Commissioner Ernest Hargett says the home had smoke detectors but the batteries weren't installed properly.

"We're all sad here because we had another citizen lose their life needlessly in a fire."

A man, who was also in the home, jumped from a second story window and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

The fire marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire.
