Philadelphia City Council Overrides Mayor Nutter’s Veto of ‘DROP’ Pension Program

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Philadelphia City Council turned its back on Mayor Nutter today and — with a veto override — agreed to preserve the controversial retirement perk for city workers known as “DROP.”

Council last spring had decided to revise DROP (the Deferred Retirement Option Program) to make it less costly to the city, rather than eliminate it as the mayor wanted.

Nutter in turned vetoed the plan, and now Council, by a 17-0 vote, has overridden that veto.

So, the revised DROP becomes law, though City Council majority leader Marian Tasco (right) says even that could be revisited.

“Modifying it — tying the interest rate to the Treasury — will mitigate the cost right now, for a moment,” she told KYW Newsradio today.  “And then we can figure out what we do with the program later.”

But Mayor Nutter vows to keep fighting to abolish DROP outright.

“The bill that they passed is tinkering around the edges at best,” the mayor said today.  “We can’t afford this program.  It needs to go away.”

Six current councilmembers including Tasco are enrolled in DROP.  The other five — Donna Miller, Frank Rizzo Jr., Jack Kelly, Frank DiCicco, and Council president Anna Verna — are retiring at the end of this term.

I agree with the person above. How about we drop city counciil. All we here is how the city doesn’t have money but yet they want to keep excess in their pockets while the rest of the city suffers.

  2. mamalade says:

It’s ironic that yesterday they also had a chance to override the mayor’s veto of providing earned sick days for those working in Philadelphia, but somehow they couldn’t get enough council people for the minimum 12 votes. Perhaps they were all out celebrating how much richer they will be when their DROP payments come through. I am ashamed to be a democrat in this city. It’s disgusting.

  5. sheriff says:

What’s wrong with this picture is that the council people & district legislators are supposed to serve the people who elected them & not the other way around. Citizens of Philadelphia you are fools & deserve what you get if you continue to re-elect these crooked politicans

  7. Carolyn says:

Perhaps, the City of Philadelphia should seek an outside arbitrator, to decide the issue once and for all…

  8. Mama says:

Let’s retire them all when they come up for re-election! Everyone should make a copy of the list of those enrolled in DROP and those supporting DROP, and vote them OUT.

Typical greedy politicians. Only care for themselves, and not a whit for the people they represent. The problem is at election time we’re not given any other choices but these inconsiderate(nice way of putting it) people. We need new political parties. These democrats and republicans are all in it just for themselves.

    1. bottomline says:

You bring up an interesting issue. Voter’s choice? It’s time all ballots, in all elections, include, “None of the Above,” as a binding choice. This would remove these people from the ballots and force “them” to enter new choices. Sooner or later we’ll find some honest people, out to serve Americans, instead of the corporate and special interests pimps.
