Wilmington Police Marine Unit Discover Body In Christiana River

WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS) -- Police in Wilmington made a gruesome discovery while conducting a training exercise Monday afternoon.

The Wilmington Police Marine unit was conducting normal training exercises in the Christiana River near East 7th Street where the Brandywine Creek enters the river, when an officer spotted what appeared to be a body.

When officers went to investigate, it was determined that it was in fact the body of a deceased man.

The body was recovered and transported back to the Medical Examiner's Office where an autopsy to determine the cause of death is pending.

The dead man was positively identified as Arthur Washington, 51, from Wilmington.

At this point in the investigation into the cause of death, police do not suspect foul play.
