Citizens Design Map Proposals For Philadelphia Council Redistricting

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - City Council as early as tomorrow could unveil its plan to re-draw council's district boundaries. And a local firm that held a map making contest is hoping that the lawmakers consider the winning entries.

A Center City software engineering firm called Azavea last month held a contest with one goal:

"Get the public involved in the redistricting process."

So Azavea president Robert Cheetham created a website, a browser-based mapping software allows anyone to design their own Philadelphia council district map. The goals -- creating maps that are more compact and less convoluted than the one Council currently uses.

"Our greatest hope is that council will consider the winning plans, and take them into account as they decide on a new district plan for the next ten years."

City Council hasn't released its own plans yet, but may on Thursday. You can see the maps that won the contest -- and design your own -- at www.fixphillydistricts.com.
