PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Most people feel that bringing a young dog to live with an older one can only benefit both dogs. This can be true, considering that the senior can be an excellent role model and guide for the younger dog, and the young dog can bring a sense of vitality to the senior. But before introducing a younger dog to a senior dog in a household, there are certain things to keep in mind.

First, you must always consider what is best for your senior dog. It’s extremely important to really know the personality and circumstances of your older dog. Is he/she suffering from any ailments such as arthritis or cataracts? Is the personality and energy level of the younger dog compatible with that of the older dog? Has the senior always been the only dog or is it used to living with other dogs?

It’s also important to be able to spend enough time equally with both dogs. Observe how they interact. Look for signs of stress. Do not show favoritism. Make sure that the adjustment goes smoothly with calm praise and reassurance when the dogs remain calm together. Do your part and they’ll take care of the rest.
