PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The application deadline is today for those who want to acquire the USS Olympia.
Jesse Lebovics, manager of the historic ships for the Independence Seaport Museum, says letters of intent to acquire the Spanish American war cruiser are expected from at least five groups in Philadelphia, Baltimore, North Carolina and California.
“What we’re receiving this week are basically a short, 10-11 page summary of where you intend to go, what your plan is.”
Lebovics says responses to the plans will come in about a month. Then those who pass this stage will be required to supply more detailed plans in about six months.
Lebovics says about $5 million worth of dry dock work will have to be done before the Olympia goes anywhere. He says the Museum hopes to have the cruiser in new hands by the end of 2013.
