Worker Swept Into Manhole Found Dead At Mercer County Sewage Treatment Center

LAWRENCE, N.J. (CBS) -- The search for a worker who was sucked into a drainage pipe has ended in tragedy after rescue workers found his body late Tuesday evening.

The incident took place on Bakers Basin Road near the Raritan Canal in Lawrence Township, just after 2 p.m.

Landscapers were working to clear standing floodwater from the area and removed a manhole cover. As the water was being sucked down by the manhole, one of the workers was pulled into the drainage pipe and subsequently trapped in the sewage system.

According to police, the worker's body was discovered about two miles away at the Mercer County sewage treatment center

Earlier, crews had sucked some of the water from the drain and were using camera equipment to try and locate the man, a lengthy search and rescue mission covered the nearby canal and parts of the sewage system.

His identification has not yet been released.
