Delaware County Officials Want Residents To Sign Up For Emergency Alerts

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Delaware County is ramping up in preparation of Hurricane Irene, and officials want residents to be ready, too.

Extra staff is being brought in to handle 911 emergency calls over the weekend. Crews have been checking to make sure storm sewers are cleared.

The county wants residents to sign up for the Delco Emergency Alert System, a mass text and email notification system.

Ed Truitt is Emergency Services Director.

"If there is an evacuation from an area, the folks who have subscribed to Delco Alert will learn whether or not the evacuation affects their area and where people are being evacuated to," Truitt said. "So if they're at their work place in Philadelphia and their family in Trainor is being evacuated, they'll know where to go to meet their family."

Truitt also suggests everyone discuss an emergency plan with their family as well as pack a kit with essential medications and 72 hours worth of supplies.
