Jay Lloyd's Getaway: A Nearby, Low-Cost Day Trip For Biking and Hiking

Macungie, Pa. (CBS) - For an active outdoor getaway that's easy on the wallet, try nearby Bear Creek Mountain, where you can enjoy a day in the cool, wooded confines of nature.

And the price is right: it doesn't get much better than free.

Mountain bikers and eager hikers can spend a day pumping and trekking on more than seven miles of pristine and scenic trails at Bear Creek Mountain Resort, in nearby Berks County.

"They are single track. We have rocks, we have exposed roots, we have bridges –- pretty much anything you can find in nature," says Megan Weir, who keeps tabs on who and what are on the trails at any given time.

And she points out that if you aren't up to biking this intermediate-to-advanced terrain, you can still take a hike, wandering the trails that follow the fringes of the ski slopes.

Dogs are welcome, too, as long as they're leashed.

And access is free.  Just stop first at the kiosk on the access road overlooking the lake to pick up a free trail map and sign in.

Then, when the trek is over, the last stop is the appropriately named Trails End Café and Bar for a snack and a welcome drink.
