Pay Attention To Your Child's Backpack

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - I know that any kids out there do not want to hear this but the start of the school year is not that far off.

Certainly we know that many people are beginning to look for school supplies and one of the most important decisions a parent or student can make before the start of the school year is to select the best back pack.

Many students carry their books from class to class and then home -- not some of the books but all of them. I know that it does not make sense, but lots of things kids do don't make sense.

Here are some tips to avoid injury:

Pick a back pack with a strap that allows weight to be distributed throughout the entire back -- not one area. Instruct those using the backpacks to bend at the knees when lifting. Don't bend at the waist. Check the student's bag every few days during the year to make certain that it is not overloaded.
